The True Meaning of Pictures: Shelby Lee Adams' Appalachia plot

For over 30 years, Shelby Lee Adams has photographed remote communities in the Appalache Mountains of Kentucky. His subjects are small farmers, who often still live without running water and electricity. Adam's striking black-and-white photographs are simultaneously beautiful and disturbing. They have garnered both criticism and praise. Does his work distort the image of poor people who have also been misrepresented in the popular media, the so-called Hillbillies? Or is he documenting an authentic but slowly disappearing way of life, far removed from the well-known America?
