The Sound of Masks plot

Mapiko is a traditional male-only masked dance of the Makonde tribe in northern Mozambique, used to poke fun at colonial rule during the 1960s War of Independence. His talent for Mapiko gave Atanásio Nyusi the opportunity to become a professional dancer, saving him from having to fight in the civil war that broke out after independence. As he reveals his life story, the legendary dancer also guides the viewer through the larger history.
