The Man Who Couldn’t Leave plot
Today it is a memorial park, but in 1949 Green Island off the southeast coast of Taiwan was a penal colony where political prisoners were imprisoned. It was the time of the White Terror, when the island nation's military rulers declared a state of emergency and aggressively persecuted communists. An estimated four thousand Taiwanese did not survive that period, many more were imprisoned for years.
