The Light in Her Eyes plot

"A woman is a school. If you teach her, you teach a generation."

In Damascus, the capital of Syria, the mosque has traditionally been a place for men; women profess their faith at home. Conservative Muslim clerics emphasize it on television: women should reproduce at home and take care of their families. Religious rules or traditionally determined? Under the leadership of Houda al-Habash, the inspiring director of the Al-Zahra Quran School, women are trying to investigate. As a spiritual leader within this Muslim women's movement, Al-Habash advocates for Quranic knowledge, education and women who think for themselves and take their responsibilities. She drives a car, teaches in other mosques, and counsels women in domestic conflicts. By teaching her students to interpret the contents of the Qur'an, she gives them strength and self-esteem. We follow Houda al-Habash and her students through the three-month summer program, in which she guides her girls with a strong hand, explains the difference between religion and extremism and shows how she can also be a good wife and mother despite her busy schedule. A rare look at why women in our modern world choose Islam.
