Fat SUVs gather for Mad Max-esque races over the sand dunes. A man races through the desert with a cheetah in his Lamborghini for the ultimate speed kick. Tough motorcyclists in leather jackets roll out a rug in the desert to pray on. A falconer transports his birds to a tournament by private jet. These stunning scenes chronicle a weekend in the desert of Qatar. The common thread is falconry, a tradition that goes back some four thousand years. The sport, in which the bird of prey has to catch a pigeon as quickly as possible, is still very highly regarded. Special breeding farms, auctions and vets who polish beaks and apply wing prostheses: it's serious business.
