The Calf Doll plot

A retired professor tries to make ends meet with his wife by holding on to their small plot of land and their last cow. However, in the early morning hours, his only remaining farmhand informs him that the calf was stillborn. The professor is saddened by this news and begs him to care for the sick animal, but the young man leaves for the city, where he has been offered a better job.
