The Battle of Algiers, a Film Within History plot

The feature film La Bataille d'Algiers (1967) tells the heroic story of the Algerian urban guerrilla Front de Libération Nationale (FLN), who successfully fought their way to independence. The screenplay is based on the experiences of FLN leader Yacef Saadi, who plays himself in the film. While the story has an iconic and emotional charge for many Algerians, the film was banned in France for a long time. The awarding of the Golden Lion to director Pontecorvo at the Venice Film Festival aroused the fury of the French delegation.
