Terril plot

The geography of Charleroi, originally flat, is determined by slag heaps: hills created from mining waste. The documentary examines a tragic accident in 1956 that was the result of the industrial revolution.

This is not just "a" tragic accident as the synopsis unfortunately shows. The mine disaster in Marcinelle is the largest mine disaster in Belgian history and one of the largest in European mining history. On 8 August 1956, a fire in Bois du Cazier killed 262 people of twelve different nationalities, including 136 Italians and 95 Belgians. No more Italians as guest workers. In their place came North Africans and Turks...

Cinematically it is very little. Some pictures and photos, nothing more. For the rest a voice-over that very businesslike describes the day of a miner who gets up and goes to work. I found the second part less relevant about sulphide and such.

Interesting piece of documentary that in my opinion has its place in a museum solely and entirely as an informative digital medium.
