Sobytie plot

"Three days that shook the world or much ado about nothing?"

Moscow, August 1991: Towards the end of the 70-year rule of the Soviets, a group of hardcore communists stage a failed coup d'état. The so-called putsch heralds the beginning of the end of the Soviet Union: not much later, the tricolor of modern Russia is hoisted over the Kremlin. Twenty-five years later, director Sergei Loznitsa looks back on those tense days in 1991 and relives the dramatic events – which were labeled worldwide as the birth of 'Russian democracy'.

Compilation of archive footage (in black and white) from Moscow and Leningrad of the coup that took place on 19 August 1991 while the then head of state Mikhail Gorbachev had travelled to Crimea, and the four days that followed. There is no narrator, the speeches of politicians and prominent citizens are interspersed with casual comments from bystanders and passers-by. In the collective memory, Boris Yeltsin became a national hero by climbing onto a tank and calling on the military not to shoot at civilians. Loznitsa raises questions about this, but these are not sufficiently expressed. As a retrospective of a key moment in recent Russian history, this is undoubtedly very valuable.
