Ri Chang Dui Hua plot
Anu is a tomboy. Although she was married off at a young age—as was common in Taiwan in the 1970s—and had two children, she quickly divorced her abusive husband and raised her daughters alone. Since then she has only had contacts with women who, like her, made a living by comforting mourners at funerals. One of her daughters is filmmaker Hui-Chen Huang. It is considered taboo in Chinese culture to question a mother's unconditional love, and yet this is precisely the subject of Huang's intimate portrait. Mother and daughter embark on a joint journey into the past that confronts Anu with questions that have tormented her daughter for years. They discuss topics such as trust, abuse, and knowledge, and yet most of these discussions end in an awkward silence.
