Replica plot

Qin, Sonya, and Muna are three young Chinese women searching for love—but in contemporary China, intimacy is anything but a given. Disappointed by real relationships, they each find refuge with an AI lover: Qin creates the perfect partner via an app, Sonya tests the boundaries of desire and vulnerability, and Muna—married but deeply lonely—finds in her digital soulmate the courage to radically change her life. Their stories touch upon something universal: what if an algorithm understands you better than the people around you?

In China, it is not uncommon for young women to have an AI version of a man as a boyfriend. Liang documented the relationships Qi and Sonya have with their AI friend, and with a woman considering taking on an AI friend due to an unhappy marriage. Although Liang portrays the women as objectively as possible, she does not shy away from a confrontational interview with AI friend Lu Chen. At least as remarkable is the attention given to the profession of cosplayer. Fascinating, thought-provoking, and yet also a tad worrying.
