Putin, Russia and the West plot

End of 1999: Russian President Boris Yeltsin announces that Vladimir Putin will be his successor, who will then be prime minister. He is stubbornly holding on to power after eight years as president of Russia and four years as prime minister. He has announced his return as president and has declared his party the winner in parliamentary elections, which are widely regarded as fraudulent. Putin started his career as a KGB spy, but when he became president, he made himself a valued ally of the West. How did he do that? And what made Washington and London turn against him?
