Allard Detiger captured the extremely complex relationship with his now elderly mother in this remarkable documentary that takes place over a period of 10 years. Because his older brother lives in the US at the age of 20, Allard has a lot on his plate when the police contact him because neighbors have expressed great concerns about his mother's behavior and the quality of life in her home. Allard suggests at one point that his mother is a borderline narcissist. She annoys everyone with complaints about her health and the lack of (timely) care. Well, he is certainly a difficult person, but judging by the bizarre intermezzos in a swimming pool, Allard is mainly concerned with portraying himself as a victim. That message would certainly have been more convincing if he had put this documentary in the hands of an outsider. This documentary seems more like a signal that he is just as narcissistic as his mother.

It rubs on all sides...

So raw, so painful, so confrontational.

So private, so close, so personal.

So real, so honest, so vulnerable.

So disastrous, so destructive, so hopeless.

I didn't want to see it, I didn't want to miss it.

A problematic family relationship, due to an egocentric and manipulative mother with borderline. In a sense, such reconstructions are always quite interesting, but for me it doesn't add much. And it is sometimes a bit too intimate.
