Of Shadows plot

Portrait of a traveling theater company in northwestern China, where the age-old art of shadow play is still kept alive in improvised village theaters. However, that is not easy: many young people are no longer interested in classical puppet theater and prefer to go to the opera. Documentary maker Yi Cui followed the musicians and puppeteers as they prepared for the most important theater and folklore festival of the year. It is the perfect place to put yourself in the spotlight of important theaters at home and abroad, where the rewards are much more generous. However, not all members of the company are waiting for an invitation from the big cities. Their base is in the countryside, where they move from village to village. Night after night they act out their stories behind the canvas in cramped stone houses. It may not yield much, but out of love for the profession they fight on bravely.
