New Voices in an Old Flower plot

The music from Ethiopia, which gained some international fame, dates from the fifties to the eighties of the last century. Filmmaker and music producer Quino Piñero became addicted to this music and decided to move to Ethiopia to explore the music scene up close. He discovered that there is still a rich music culture in the capital Addis Abeba, which receives (too) little attention. In this documentary he lets musicians have their say and, above all, let them play. In addition to interviews, there are many images of studio recordings and atmospheric live performances – both of contemporary Ethiopian jazz, pop and reggae with a resonance of tradition, and hip-hop more American-style as well as fresh electronic sounds. The film explores not only the music scene, but also the city itself: the slums, the lively nightlife and the colorful inhabitants.
