The film is based on the book of the same name by the English writer Norman Lewis, who entered the devastated and bombed Naples in 1943 with the fifth division of the American army. The former officer returns as a well-known writer to the city that charmed him at the time. Continuous flashbacks take us from today's Neapolitan reality to the past.
