Fred Leuchter introduces himself as a bizarre kind of human being. He shows in gruesome detail how he managed to perfect the electric chair. In many American states, the execution of death row inmates was not always effective. Technical imperfections could thus give rise to unsavory scenes, and Leuchter set himself up as the one who managed to guarantee a humane death. The states where the death sentence is carried out by hanging, the administration of a lethal injection or gassing also called on Leuchter's expertise.
