Jackie 'Moms' Mabley (1894-1975) broke through many boundaries in her career as a comedienne. Debut director Whoopi Goldberg is one of the Moms-inspired comedians himself and has many colleagues speaking, including women like Joan Rivers and Anne Meara and black artists like Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte. The latter talk about the period of American racial segregation, the civil rights movement and the Chitlin' Circuit - a special performance circuit for black artists.
