Metamorphose: M.C. Escher, 1898-1972 plot
Documentary on the occasion of Escher's hundredth birthday. Director Jan Bosdriesz closely follows Escher's life and thus brings perspective to a diverse oeuvre. While Escher's letters are frequently quoted, and the graphic artist himself occasionally speaks, photos glide by, the places where he lived come to life. The Netherlands' most famous graphic artist, MC Escher, created one of his most famous works with Metamorphosis II. The cityscape with which the meter-long woodcut from 1940 ends, resembles the southern Italian coastal town of Atrani like two drops of water. This documentary pays ample attention to the period that Escher stayed in Italy. They were the happiest years of his life.
