You could say that the director could not choose between a documentary about the history of Chinese Dutch people or a personal search by the director, daughter of a Chinese Indonesian restaurant owner in Rozenburg, for her identity.
However, this combination works very well.
I found it very educational and was quite ashamed that I actually knew so little about the history of this population group.
The old footage of Rotterdam (some from before the First World War!) is delightful, and the director's exploration is deeply moving, without any sensationalism. She also offers the viewer an interesting glimpse into the generally closed Chinese culture.
Meanwhile, Julie Ng has also managed to get Babi Pangang added to the list of Dutch cultural heritage.
Kudos to this woman!

Julie Ng, now 46, spent most of her childhood in her parents' Chinese-Indonesian restaurant, a fact she long felt ashamed of. In this documentary, she explores the migration history of the Chinese-Indonesian population and advocates for recognition of the Chinese-Indonesian restaurant as Dutch cultural heritage. Archive footage (including a hilarious excerpt from De Bauers) reveals the ignorance of the Dutch people. An interesting lesson in migration and cultural history falls by the wayside when Ng allows herself to be distracted by racism. However relevant the topic, it takes her onto a poorly developed sidetrack. Filmed on location in Leeuwarden, St. Oedenrode, and Eindhoven, among other places.
