Deep-fried thin pork strips on a bed of pickled cucumber, drizzled with a fluorescent red-orange sweet-and-sour sauce: who hasn't heard of babi pangang? In this personal documentary, debut director Julie Ng, daughter of a Chinese-Indonesian restaurant owner, searches for the origins of this iconic dish. Her journey leads her not only to an answer to the question of babi pangang's origins, but also to unfamiliar parts of her own Chinese heritage. The dish proves to be the key to a deeper understanding of what it means to be Chinese-Dutch.
