Is it a girl or a boy? That is usually the first question parents get after the birth of their child. A simple question, you might think, but that's not always the case. Not all children are born with a clear gender. Some have both male and female characteristics, this is called "intersexuality". People with both characteristics are popularly called hermaphrodites, but that is a term that is experienced as offensive. Intersex people often have to deal with certain physical and mental problems. In Me, My Sex and I, intersex people and their families testify about the physical and especially mental hurdles they have to overcome every day. The problems start right after birth. Society demands that parents choose a gender, but which gender do they choose? Do they allow their child to undergo painful and very invasive operations? How do the children, often torn by confusing feelings, grow up?
