Documentary about the life and work of the artist Max Ernst (1891 - 1976). Director Schamoni, Ernst's close friend, had the opportunity to follow the artist in his last years. Ernst talks about the different phases of his work that resulted from his vagabond-like life. The incendiary Dada period in Cologne, surrealism in France, his retreat to French Provence, his flight to New York, his stay with the Hopi Indians in Arizona and his return to Europe.
