Mata Mata is a Brazilian term for a 'knock out' match in football: an 'all or nothing' match. And that's what it's all about for the young footballers in this film. Talent abounds in Brazil, competition all the more. Hoffmann followed a number of young players at different stages of their careers for three years. 17-year-old Danilo receives offers from many European clubs. The 18-year-old central defender Carlinhos has taken the plunge and plays for Bayer Leverkusen. The 30-year-old Dante has made it in Europe, through Charleroi and Standard, among others, he ended up at Bayern Munich. But he also has another dream: a permanent place in the Brazilian national team.
