Le Dernier des Papous plot
The Hulis are one of the largest of the 950 tribes in Papua New Guinea. Living in one of the most remote parts of the island, they saw the first whites, Methodist missionaries, arrive in 1955. Since then, these missionaries have had to compete with a hundred other denominations to convert as many Papuans as possible. Women can still see baptism as a kind of new recognition, but this does not apply to men. For them, it means renunciating polygamy, tribal warfare, and most traditions. In “Christ Comes to the Papuans,” the director follows the final weeks leading up to the baptism of ancient Huli warriors and their leader Ghini, who has just demolished the ancestral home to make way for a church, in preparation for the baptism of the community.
