The history of a century of development, from the rise of Finnish nationalism under Tsarist Russia to the heyday of post-war liberalism, when Scandinavia was hip in Europe among the moderate left. A musing on memory and heritage. A Family as a Nation: Through three generations of the Ahos family, Von Bagh traces Finland's arduous road to independence, and how it has evolved from a poor, backward agricultural country to an outstanding example of progress and liberalism. The film is a poignant study of the essence of being Finnish.
