La Rose de Tirana plot

Through the unusual fate of a young Hungarian who became Queen of Albania in 1938, Frédéric Mitterrand traces a century of the tormented history of this small Balkan country. The daughter of a poor Hungarian count and an American, Géraldine Apponyi was 5 years old when the Austro-Hungarian Empire was dismantled at the end of World War I. Her family moved to Switzerland before settling in Menton, on the death of the father, in 1924. Her mother remarried a French officer and then sent her to an Austrian boarding school. On her return to Budapest, Géraldine started selling souvenirs in the shop of the National Museum. At a ball to which she was invited in 1938, her beauty was a sensation. A while later she was invited by the king of Albania twenty years her senior and despite the age difference it was love at first sight...
