La Pasión de María Elena plot
In 1999, in the town of Creel, Mexico, a 3-year-old boy is run over by a pickup truck right in front of his mother. He dies on the spot. This film tells the life story of the young, divorced mother María Elena, who tries to survive as an Indian. She belongs to the Rarámuri Indians from the mountainous north of Mexico, where divorce is not accepted. For María Elena, it is vital that the woman who ran over her child admits her guilt. This is followed by a journey of many years along the traditional Rarámuri judicial system and the official legal roads. Corruption and discrimination prevent justice from being served, but help comes from a spiritual angle.
