Kyrgyzstan - Tussen Wanhoop en Welvaart plot
Documentary about the reforms in the CIS state of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan, one of the fifteen republics that declared its independence from Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union, has made great progress in reforming the failed planned economy, despite its isolated location and scarce resources. Despite this, living standards are falling and communist sentiments are resurfacing. The documentary follows the trail of the reforms with images of the decontamination of a secret torpedo factory. Furthermore, the viewer witnesses the dismantling of the collective farms and the beginning of privatization. Finally, President Akaev explains his 'shock therapy'. His policy is a race against time, as the question is whether the reforms will be able to stay ahead of social unrest.
