In 1911, the wealthy and progressive industrialist Ernest Solvay called a small group of top European scientists to the Hotel Métropole in Brussels to reflect on problems within their field. It was the first of many solvay wheels that played a crucial role in the development of modern physics. More than 100 years later, these biennial solvay councils are still organized.
