On November 20, 1975, dictator Franco dies and at last Spain can slowly transform itself into a democracy. It is the beginning of an era called transición, which for some ends on December 6, 1978 with the ratification of the Spanish Constitution. For others with the Spanish Socialist Party's election victory in 1982, after the failed fascist coup attempt the year before. This film covers the run-up to the first free post-Franco election on June 15, 1977. Portabella himself was also a candidate and he would help write the draft of the 1978 constitution.
