In Transit plot
The film, made in a collective of five directors, follows the passengers of the Empire Builder, the much-used long-distance train between Chicago and Seattle. The makers worked with handheld cameras, unobtrusive sound equipment and only used natural light. It resulted in in-depth interviews with passengers, fragments of overheard conversations or wordless observations. Maysles and the other directors paint an almost timeless portrait of America. Children monkey cages in the carriages, the conductor looks back on his childhood in a village along the railway and a heavily pregnant woman hopes that she will not give birth on the train.
