In een Vreemd Land plot

Documentary follows three underage African asylum seekers who await their application for a residence permit in the Netherlands. The boys live in a small housing unit where they learn to live independently. Bernard comes from the Congo torn by civil war. He has been living in Middelburg for three months. Toni is an ex-child soldier from Sudan. He has been promised a temporary residence permit and he will appeal against it. Finally, Pedro is also from Sudan. His asylum application has been rejected because he is believed to be lying about his parentage. The boys learn Dutch, cook and make friends. Yet it is also difficult to live in a foreign country without parents. They often have nightmares and headaches and are constantly aware of the uncertainty of whether to stay or return to their homeland.
