'Hollandse Nieuwe' is about the last real herring fishermen in the Netherlands. A phenomenon for more than a thousand years, the Dutch Nieuwe herring has become an integral part of our national culture. Every year, millions of compatriots at home and abroad look forward to the arrival of the first keg. Although the Dutch economy in the Middle Ages was still based on the earnings of the herring fishery, today the Dutch herring fleet has shrunk drastically. Only two ships - the Wiron 5 and Wiron 6 - of Rederij Jaczon from Scheveningen still sail under the Dutch flag on Hollandse Nieuwe. The other ships of Dutch shipowners often fish for herring under a foreign flag. Reason for the queen not to receive the "Queen's herring" since 2003. Hollandse Nieuwe is told from the inside out, in which the romance, comradeship and herring are celebrated and where the disappearance of one last piece of Dutch Glory gradually becomes clear.
