Give Us the Money plot
In the early '90s, Bob Geldof, Bono, and a host of other celebrities recorded the Christmas single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" to raise money for Africa. That project got a little out of hand. The Band Aid concert that followed put poverty in Africa on the political map and made Bob and Bono two icons of poverty reduction. They have raised large sums of money over the past 25 years and persuaded politicians to cancel Africa's debt, but that has also brought them a load of criticism. How effective have all these actions been? Is their motivation purely to fight poverty or is it self-interest? And why were African politicians never spoken to?
