Girlhood plot

Shanae was arrested when she was 12 for stabbing a friend to death. Megan's mother was a drug-addicted prostitute and she was placed in foster care numerous times, from which she fled just as many times. Megan also committed a violent act. Director Garbus meets the girls at the Waxter Juvenile Facility while filming a documentary about boys who were also incarcerated there. She gets to know them better and discovers the stories behind their actions and investigates how the legal system treats them.
