Flowers of Freedom plot
Barskoon, a small village in Kyrgyzstan, was the victim of a fatal accident. Every day, trucks loaded with cyanide drive through the village to transfer the highly toxic substance to a nearby gold mine. There it is used to separate the gold from the ore. But in 1998 one of these trucks has an accident and ends up in the river. As a result, hundreds of people become seriously ill, many of whom die. Because the Kyrgyz government refuses to intervene, Erkingül, together with women friends, sets up a small environmental organization, which initially wants to ban access to the mine. After that, the women demand compensation of 3.7 million dollars from the Kyrgyz/Canadian society.
