When the newspaper "Het Parool" revealed in the early 1990s that the idiosyncratic filmmaker Louis van Gasteren liquidated a Jewish person in hiding in 1943, a lengthy process followed that Van Gasteren ultimately won. In “A Chainsaw for the Past” the filmmaker speaks for the first time about this subject in front of the camera. The film shows how this dramatic event influenced his work and life, as well as the relationship with his famous parents - his mother was a celebrated singer, and his father the famous actor Louis van Gasteren Sr. - was of great influence. Documentary maker Ad 's Gravesande interviewed Van Gasteren in his home in Amsterdam, in Echternach in Luxembourg, where he grew up, and in Sardinia, where he once empathized with the life of a shepherd. Interviews and archive material are interspersed with fragments from his films, which, as it turns out, are part of a laborious process.
