The film regained popularity (at least for me) thanks to Christopher Nolan's film. Nolan truly immersed the viewer in Dunkirk during the evacuation and the raging war. The 2004 miniseries Dunkirk takes a different approach. While you're less immersed in the action than Nolan's, it does offer a very clear overview of history. No romantic narrative, but primarily facts with a mix of archive footage and reenactments. The experience here is more grounded in realism, and the combination with the archive footage truly gives a clear sense of the time. The approach feels more like a creatively crafted documentary than a war film with archive footage. A minor caveat, but definitely worth watching.

Thursday afternoon, I got to work on this Dunkirk, which I'd picked up at Boekenvoordeel on a whim. And honestly, I expected a much newer series, but it turned out to be 20 years old. Not that that's necessarily a drawback, but oh well...

Anyway, let's get started, but even there the series surprises me. Unlike a full-blown miniseries with stories and actors, I'm watching some kind of hybrid, with relatively short scenes, original footage, and a voiceover constantly narrating everything. And all of that isn't necessarily a drawback, but rather something different than expected. And honestly, it all feels rather dry and stale, and as mentioned, if you're expecting a relatively new series, maybe only a year or two old, and you're suddenly in the middle of this, it takes some getting used to and adjusting.

But enough complaining. Dunkirk does indeed offer a meticulous and detailed account of the lead-up, the formation of the pocket, the pressure, the panic, and the importance of a successful operation. This is, of course, on a grand scale, with many characters, the operation and its problems seen from all perspectives—both on land and in the navy, as well as the admiralty and political sides—with the survival of the country at stake. Besides that, there's also attention to war crimes, tactical errors, and blunders on both sides, and we see extraordinary examples of sacrifice and courage, such as the naval officers who board a burning ship to fight the fire. It's a story about decisiveness, improvisation, and tenacity.

We'll just have to accept that it all feels a bit dated, and that some scenes are very small-scale. Perhaps it should be seen in the context of what was possible for a 2004 series with a $2 million budget. Oh, and of course, it's definitely better than Nolan's film.
