Dong plot
In this project, Zhangke portrays his friend and one of China's most famous artists, Liu Xiaodong. Zhangke observes the painter and his projects in Bangkok and Fengjie. Zhangke may have gotten his idea for Still Life from this last location. Several shots of the streetscape and demolition work in Dong are also used to illustrate the life of the city in Still Life. In addition, the workers painted by Liu are the actors in Still Life.
