Dokkoi! Ningen Bushi - Kotobukicho: Jiyu Rodosha no Machi plot

In the center of the port of Yokohama is one of the three largest slums in Japan. Thousands of people struggle to survive here, despite the appalling living conditions. Most have no money for food, others are exploited by the port industry. All are at risk of falling victim to disease or industrial accidents. When someone dies, it often goes unnoticed. The corpses are not buried but simply left to the elements. Documentary filmmaker Shinsuke Ogawa spent ten months in this urban area, where knives are drawn at the slightest provocation.
