DNA Dreams plot
"The Beijing Genomics Institute delves into the genetic code in search of the stuff from which geniuses are made."
What would happen if the gene that determines our IQ was found? What if humans and animals could simply be cloned? Is there a new world full of perfect people waiting? And do we want that world? In China's Pearl River Delta, that world is in the making. On the outskirts of Shenzhen, BGI has recently become the largest genetic research institute in the world. Day and night, 4,000 young scientists work here to map the DNA of plants, humans and animals. For example, eighteen-year-old high school dropout Zhao Bowen leads an international research team that wants to find the genes for intelligence. He teams up with the brilliant young psychologist Yang Rui, who takes IQ tests on gifted children and collects blood samples containing their DNA. In a lab further on, forty young people, led by 24-year-old Lin Lin, are working on a cloning project that, among other things, produces fluorescent mini-pigs and wants to grow into a 'clone factory'.
