De Zee Lacht Me Toe plot

While the Netherlands is largely bursting at the seams due to increasing population pressure, some areas are actually being hit by shrinkage. The port city of Delfzijl in northeast Groningen is symbolic of this phenomenon. The sea smiles at me is a portrait of a Delfzijl working-class district, built in the post-war reconstruction years, which is now slowly but steadily disappearing. Residents reminisce, interspersed with nostalgic archive images and the unrelenting sights and sounds of the demolition work. It is remarkable how much some residents are attached to the shabby-looking semi-detached houses. But the emotional bond proves invaluable, especially if a family from generation to generation inhabits the house and has shared joys and sorrows. This creates a melancholy mosaic of honest and simple people, who try to keep their spirits up while their environment is literally being demolished.
