A look at the life of Irish musician Shane MacGowan, lead singer of the Pogues. Director Julien Temple emphatically connects MacGowan's life story with the troubled relationship between Ireland, the country where he has his roots, and England, the country where he grew up and became an iconic face of the first punk wave. From this perspective, it was inevitable that it was MacGowan, the outsider, who, in the 1980s, gave traditional Irish folk a punky sweep and became the voice of a new generation of Irishmen.
