Clown in Kabul plot

Gray is the color of life in arid, poor Afghanistan, so the colorful balloons on the windows of the white van are all the more striking. The balloons bring a message of happiness and peace to the war-torn country. That is the mission of the 21-strong international group of 'clown doctors' who made a five-week journey through Afghanistan in early 2002. The clowns – from countries including Australia, America, the Netherlands, Japan and Italy – visited various hospitals, schools, refugee camps and orphanages. The group was led by American doctor Hunter "Patch" Adams, the inventor of "red nose diplomacy" whose motto is "a smile heals too."
