16-year-old Jasmine is one of millions, often very young, workers who leave the poor Chinese countryside for the factory in the hope that they can help their relatives left behind with their salary. She works as a loose thread cutter in a jeans factory and, like her friends Li Ping, Orchid and Jade, lives on the factory grounds with 12 girls in a room. The rent and money for meals from the canteen are deducted from their wages. In her diary, Jasmine writes about her daily life: about work, the dirty food, and the homesickness.
