The magical moment of pressing two buttons – record and play – after which you could record whatever you wanted: top 40 songs for your sweetheart, potential hits for your upcoming record company, messages for overseas family. The compact cassette, as it is officially called, started the democratization of music making in the 1970s and is now experiencing an unlikely revival.
