Beyond Reason: A Friend on Death Row plot
At the age of 17, the Dutch Gea Knol started an exchange of letters with Bryan Jennings, who was sentenced to death in Florida. In 1980, the Marine raped and murdered a six-year-old girl. Now, seventeen years after the first letter, their contact has grown into a close relationship and Gea has even published the correspondence. The proceeds will go to a Dutch lawyer in New Orleans. Beyond Reason shows how Gea Knol is trying to convert the demanded death penalty to life in the United States, together with the Dutch lawyer. She visits his family, makes friends with an anti-death penalty group, and reports on her visit to Jennings. Filmmaker Marijke Jongbloed portrays the passionate woman and participates in her struggle by approaching, not without risk, the mother of the murdered girl with the request to save Jennings from death.
