Bastøy plot

Bastøy is an island in the Oslofjord in Norway. The island is a state prison. Here 115 criminals are serving their sentences for drug trafficking, manslaughter and fraud. They are mainly long-term prisoners. The guards are unarmed. The prisoners have the key to their own room. In fact, the island is run by the inmates and the staff together. The documentary follows the lives of the prisoners. Some work in construction, others in the forests, where they attack the trees with large axes and chainsaws. The film also follows a young inmate who moves from a closed prison from the mainland to the island.
