Barzaj plot
On a clear day, from Melilla on the African north coast, you can see the Spanish mainland, the gateway to Europe, where the promise of a better life beckons. As in his previous film Bolingo: The Forest of Love, Alejandro Salgado focuses his camera in Barzakh on people who hope to make the crossing to the promised land in the coastal region. This time it is about a group of underage boys who hide in caves and caverns of the mountain landscape. The boys stoking fires and chain smoking muse about their future. They harbor simple dreams, such as finding a wife to have children together who will have more wealth and happiness than they have been given.
