Abuelos plot
Documentary maker Carla Valencia Dávila had two special grandfathers. One was active in the political struggle of his country, the other had healed many dying Ecuadorians as a miracle doctor. Valencia Dávila saw that their stories mirrored each other. Grandpa Juan was murdered by the Chilean military dictatorship in 1973. Grandpa Remo strived for immortality with his special medicine. The film navigates between death and immortality, but also between two landscapes: one part of the film was shot in the leafy mountain area of Ecuador, the other part in the more arid and desolate desert area. Valencia Dávila speaks with those involved: patients who were miraculously cured by Remo. And with acquaintances of Juan, who regard him as a dreamer, an activist, a martyr. The result is an intimate film that is about family, but also about the history of Ecuador and Chile and about chasing dreams in a more universal way.
